Dear Current and Prospective Families,
We have had several questions regarding our plans for reopening and beginning the 2020-2021 school year. After much research, consultation, and thoughtful consideration, we intend to open Mid-South Gifted Academy on August 10. We will have policies in place to encourage behaviors that mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and we will communicate our policies and procedures to staff and families over the summer months. For families who have concerns with attending on campus, our MSGA Virtual School option will be available.
The physical safety of our students, families, and staff is our priority, and so is the social/emotional well-being. In the situation of COVID-19, there is no zero-risk option short of long-term quarantine until a vaccine is developed. We believe the way forward is by lowering the risk through mitigation with ongoing assessment to evaluate the latest information from the CDC and local officials along with the unique needs and circumstances of our small school community. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with this virus as the CDC reminded school leaders in its published Considerations for Schools. We must move forward in a way that protects our community while also providing our students the opportunity to continue with both their academic and social/emotional development within the community we have all built.
Even in the midst of this challenging situation, we are optimistic about the upcoming school year because of the things that remain certain. Our staff is committed to providing a world-class education to our students, our mastery-based model meets kids exactly where they are, and the overall well-being of our students will always be a priority. I am certain that when COVID-19 is behind us, we will be an even stronger and more resilient school community.
