Hands-On Learning at MSGA: Exploring Science with Experts

At Mid-South Gifted Academy (MSGA), we believe that the best learning happens when students engage with real-world professionals and apply their knowledge in practical settings. Recently, our high school Anatomy & Physiology students had the unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the cardiovascular system through visits from two expert guest speakers—Christy Lucas, a nurse practitioner and owner of First Choice Care & Wellness, and Mr. Talib, an experienced EMT and Zoll LifeVest contractor.

Learning to Measure and Understand Blood Pressure

For the past three weeks, our students have been immersed in the study of the cardiovascular system, exploring the anatomy of the heart, how blood circulates through the body, and the physiological mechanisms behind heart function. Christy Lucas’ visit brought these lessons to life. She taught students how to take blood pressure readings, and explained what the numbers mean, which helped them understand the critical role of blood pressure in overall health.

To take their learning even further, students conducted an experiment measuring blood pressure before and after exercise. They observed firsthand how the body adapts to physical activity and discussed how lifestyle choices impact heart health and long-term wellness.

Emergency Medicine and the LifeVest: A Look at Cardiac Care

Mr. Talib’s visit provided students with an eye-opening perspective on emergency medicine and cardiac arrest response. With years of experience as an EMT, he shared real-life stories of saving lives in critical situations, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and heart health awareness.

Students were particularly intrigued by the Zoll LifeVest, a wearable defibrillator designed for patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. Mr. Talib explained the physiology behind heart attacks, how defibrillators work, and the crucial steps people can take to prevent heart disease and cardiac emergencies. His engaging demonstration gave students a hands-on look at medical technology and the importance of understanding how the human body functions.

Bridging Classroom Learning with Real-World Applications

This experience reinforced classroom learning by connecting theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Students didn’t just read about the heart—they saw, measured, and analyzed its functions in action. Hopefully, they left these sessions with a deeper appreciation for healthcare careers, emergency response, and preventative medicine.

At MSGA, we are committed to experiential learning that prepares students for real-world success. Whether they pursue medicine, research, or health sciences, our students gain the skills, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities they need to make a difference in the world.
