Middle School VEX Robotics Team Wins Think Award in Tennessee

Celebrating Innovation in Robotics Programming

Our middle school VEX Robotics team recently earned a prestigious honor at the Tennessee State VEX Robotics Tournament — the Think Award. This award recognizes teams that demonstrate exceptional programming, innovative coding strategies, and a deep understanding of how software drives robotic performance.

The Think Award celebrates teams who go beyond simply building a robot. It highlights students who show mastery of coding, problem-solving, and collaboration, proving that successful robotics programs are powered by both engineering and programming excellence.

What the Think Award Recognizes

The Think Award is presented to teams that show outstanding skill in programming design and coding strategies used to solve the game challenge. Judges evaluate teams on several key criteria:

  • Participation in the Autonomous Coding Skills Challenge with a score greater than zero

  • Clean, well-written code that is clearly commented and easy to understand

  • A clear explanation of the programming strategy used to solve the game challenge

  • Evidence of a programming management process or version control system

  • Students demonstrating how they collaborated to develop their robot code

  • Programming that effectively performs during Qualification Matches and Autonomous Coding Skills matches

Beyond technical skill, teams must also demonstrate strong communication and teamwork.

Demonstrating Excellence in Programming and Teamwork

During the team interview, our students showcased their ability to clearly explain how their robot’s programming worked and how they collaborated throughout the season. Judges were impressed by the team’s ability to discuss:

  • Their coding structure and decision-making process

  • How they tested and improved their autonomous routines

  • The ways team members worked together to develop and refine the robot code

The team also demonstrated professionalism, strong communication skills, and a student-centered approach, key qualities that the Think Award aims to recognize.

A Team Achievement

Winning the Think Award is a testament to the team’s dedication, problem-solving mindset, and commitment to learning. Robotics competitions challenge students to think critically, iterate on their designs, and work collaboratively to solve complex engineering problems.

Congratulations to our VEX Robotics team for this outstanding accomplishment!
